Yet another reason to love UCSB: The Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project Before flat records, music was recorded on wax cylinders. This format was commercially popular from the 1890's to the 1920's. Until now they have been heard by very few people, but recently UCSB has digitized and posted about 5000 tunes on line as mp3s for free. It's a fascinating bit of history and there's some incredible music up there. Try Billy Murray and Chorus singing "Gasoline Gus and his Jitney Bus" from 1915.
